CYBER SATYRS
A portrait of internet culture that emphasizes how the hormones in our bodies shapes the algorithms.
Norwegian artist duo, Broslo, celebrated the end of 2020 by setting up an exhibition named “Happy Nuclear”. It celebrates the end of an apocalyptic year. Ludvig Holmen was tasked to create 3D graphics to be displayed on huge screens behind a stage and used for promoting the exhibition.
Following the Nuclear theme, Ludvig designed mutants which was equally eye-catching as the work of the artists. He decided to treat the project as a portrait of Internet culture that aimed to display the bodily aspects that fundamentally drives the virtual space which is often overlooked. The algorithms are often thought of as inhuman and usually visualized as networks of blue light. However, through machine learning, the algorithms promote our very hormonal instincts.
Ludvig thus decided to display the extreme bodies favoured by the algorithms. This ranges from Kim Kardashian’s silicone ass to obscure fetishes made popular by Pornhub and digital alterations such as Snapchat filters and photos edited in Photoshop. These are the Cyber Satyrs. The characters where posed according to the statues of the Norwegian sculptor, Gustav Vigeland who in the early 20th century explored the human condition through his work.
